The goal is to make the site more accessible, city spokesman Keith Furlong said. It is expected to be up and running by the end of January.
Mayor Alex Blanco increased his use of social media to communicate with residents and the website shift has the same goal, Furlong said.
Some plans include adding permit and license applications online rather than making people visit the city clerk's office.
City officials also want the site to be interactive wherever possible so residents can provide feedback, Furlong said.
"The upgrade of the city’s website is an investment in improving communication and government transparency, or put simply using technology to make it easier for the public to find information and interact with city hall," Furlong told Daily Voice.
GovOffice CMS company assisted Passaic employees with updating the site.
The current website includes photos of Blanco, tabs for elected officials, public boards, council meetings, departments and directions, plus other updates on its homepage.
